Calamity in Cahoots

Moving Forward

A quick review

  • Connors is back in town (beast of a wife, installed a bunch of ghost rock equipment in the Tick Spot)
  • Smithson Warriors – Performing an arcane/occult ritual sometime soon.
  • Rescued people from the mine. The camp was well guarded, so we haven’t rescued the people from the camp.
  • Laboratory – Discovered there were several interesting metal alloys.
  • The Indians were involved in some way, as the mine was in their territory. (Sioux Territory)
    • The Indians had the staff with the circular symbol, we think they’re somehow involved.
  • We have TC Brady captive. He’s heavily wounded, not doing well.
  • Yun had some drinks with the Sheriff and some deputies.

Next steps

Tracing the ghost rock
  • Interrogate some of the people from the mine to figure out the ghost rock destination
  • Loaded the ghost rock onto wagons, mine workers wouldn’t see it after it got loaded.
  • Hooded and robed men would leave the camp with it. They went south, towards Flat Meadows and the railroad.
  • Was there anyone from town that you recognize?
    • “One of them sounded like TC Brady, but I wouldn’t bet my life on it.”
Tracking the wagons leaving camp
  • Yun wants to head to the camp and then use tracking to find the ruts from the wagon wheels leaving the camp. She can track the trail of wagons leaving the camp and figure out where they went.
  • We’ll head back to the camp, scout it out, and attempt to rescue the other villagers.
The Camp
  • There seems to be significantly fewer people.
  • The townsfolk people are no longer there, but the robed cultists are still around.
  • Yun decides to sneak in and try to steal some robes. She brings some back, and Todd and Quentin put some on.
  • We search around the camp, especially in the main office tent.
  • Everett pops the lock to open the chest, pulling out a sealed letter. He hands it off to Todd Carver, who opens it and begins to decrypt its cyphered contents.
  • Todd decrypts the letter:
    • The location on the front is TB Mining in Santa Fe, NM
    • The letter is address to Conners
    • It says the mining operation has been compromised, and they’re getting ready to pack it up and leave.
    • Quentin has the idea: What if we write our own letter to send to Conners? We can pretend to be the bearers of the news.
Interrogating TC Brady (for the future)
  • Hit him with the club? See if that loosens his tongue.
  • We already accused him of transporting it to Salt Lake, he laughed at us.
  • Where is the ghost rock going?
  • Where/when is the ritual?
  • What is the outcome of the ritual?
  • Who are you working with?

Talking to Bill
What does he know?

Todd Carver begins interrogating Bill Snedderly. He learns that some men come in and pay him ghost rock to allow them to meet in his bar, but otherwise, Snedderly is obstinate.

Carver gets tired of Bill’s refusals. He mixes a drink with some ghost rock and whiskey and sets it next to Bill. That makes him a lot more willing to talk. He admits that one of the masked men is TC Brady and the rest wear grey, gunmetal masks.

Meanwhile, on the trail…

Guadelupe is on the trail back toward the camp where the prisoners were held. Off in the distance, she sees something headed their way. Oh no! It’s a swarm of giant bats.

She and her posse kill the bats, but a tremor alerts her that something else is wrong. She grabs her horse and runs towards town!

Back in the saloon

Carver forces Snedderly to take us into a back room, and Carver notices a section of wall that is different. Investigating a suspicious section of well, we find a secret keyhole and a shaped impression. Imprinting the club handle on the impression and putting the key in the hole, we open a secret door to a laboratory.

We investigate the lab, but are too ignorant to understand any of it. Carver takes a few samples of things to get analyzed. We tie up Snedderly and put him in the lab for safekeeping.

We head to a local apothecary to get some help with identifying the items we took from the lab. He identifies a lot of the metal as “strange”, saying that while it resembles normal metals they don’t react the same as normal metal.

We finally decide to just head out and confront TC Brady, but on the way, we run into Guadalupe, and she’s being chased by a Rattler (ie. the giant worm from Tremors).

A Heros Welcome

Reading the letters

Quentin spends his evening poring over the letters taken from the camp.

  • They are talking about doing some kind of major occult event with the sole purpose of destroying/decimating multiple states.
  • Bill Snedderly is involved.
  • Some type of Indian pact is also involved.

The Locksmith

We head to a local smith with the idea of trying to get him to fabricate a copy of TC Brady’s key. We ask him for 2 copies: one that’s an exact copy, and one that looks close but won’t actually work. After seeing the key, the locksmith immediately seems suspicious. We try to convince him, but he is really scared about the key. He knows something is weird about it. So, we retreat and head over to the Tick Spot.

Back to The Tick Spot

We head back to The Tick Spot to confront Bill Snedderly, since he was mentioned in the letters. We slam the key down on the bar and accuse him of being in cahoots with TC Brady. From behind the bar, Snedderly pulls two peacemakers and starts shooting.

Quentin goes down quick, taking a shot and collapsing over the bar. Everett runs for the door, then once outside turns around and casts fear on the entire bar. The spell panics Snedderly who runs for the back door.

Yun follows Snedderly and uses her whip and fists to bring him down. Once on the ground, she subdues him.

Goals

  • With Unconscious Snedderly – Want to learn about the key and TC Brady.
    • Everett – wants to get a lock of Snedderly’s hair.
    • Perhaps Todd Carver can interrogate him
    • Search Snedderly’s things to see if we can find any clues.
  • Yun: Clear out the mining camp, free everyone else, kill the slavers, and burn the buildings down.

Tick in the Gullet

Quentin runs to Yun, begging her to use her special Chinese powers to get the tick out of him. “Use the Touch of the Dragon, or the Phoenix Claw or whatever!”

She punches him hard in the gut, twice. It causes Quentin to retch, but no tick comes out. Finally, Quentin says, “Quit hitting me! I guess we go to town and try to find a doctor.”

Getting the Doc

Guadalupe heads into town ahead of everyone else, to try and find the town doctor. She finds someone at the bar who directs her to go find Doctor Mathis.

The Dr brings back some snake oil to the camp where everyone is staying. Quentin sucks it down and begins vomiting. The doc gives him a bottle and he eventually vomits the tick into the bottle.

Taking Everyone Back In

We walk everyone back into town, Everett marches them directly to the town square in order to claim credit for their rescue.

Yun and Todd notice that the Sheriff is looking on and he seems very angry.

Everett gives a speech in front of everyone that we did a great thing. The entire town cheers and throws their hats in the air.

WE EARN A LEGEND CHIP!!

The Sheriff

During the speech, the sheriff begins moving through the crowd toward Quentin. Yun, taking the initiative, sneaks over to the sheriff and hits him over the head with her club. In one universe, the sheriff’s head explodes, showering the crowd with gore. But in this universe, he takes a slight hit to the head and becomes suggestible from the power of the club.

Yun tells him to head home, and he begins leading his deputies away.

Talking with LuEllen

She is pleased with our success and tells us that she’s got some new information for us. She takes us to another bar, The Rusty Mug, and tells us of an interaction with TC Brady.

Apparently, TC was talking to a portly man with green eyes and grey hair. He spoke of “expanding into New Mexico”.

We show her the club with the symbol on it and she takes a rubbing, saying that she thinks she knows the symbol.

Plans for next time

  • Take the letters we recovered from the camp and confront TC Brady with it.
  • How can we figure out where TC Brady’s key fits?
View
Still in the Camp

As we’re escaping from the tent, Yun is nearly spotted. She sees that it’s the winner of the contest in the circle and someone else.

The Letters

Todd Carver looks through the letters and finds some interesting tidbits of information:

  • Making progress toward a greater plot
  • The experiments are going well
  • Almost enough material to affect a small populace
  • Increases in the range and magnitude

Back to the Mine

At the mine, there are 10 people milling about looking at the man we left tied up. The people look very confused, staring at the man at the tree. Todd Carver approaches and tells them to get back in the mine. About half go without question. Quentin steps up and shouts, “Boss said into the mine, so get in the goddamn mine!” The rest hustle off.

We untie the gunfighter and push him in front of us into the mine. We find a young woman and Guadalupe and Everett cast dispel on her, clearing her mind of the controlling powers. She collapses to the ground in fear. Yun begins slapping her, telling her to pull it together and get on her feet. Surprisingly, she does get up. We escort her out and learn that she is Anne Smarts, sister of Clara Smarts.

Yun and Guadalupe head back into the mine. They find some corpses, causing Guadalupe to vomit from the horror. Deeper still, they find a big chunk of ghost rock and a nugget of gold.

Talking to Anne

  • Snedderly did not get along with the Mulligan, the mill owner

Back to Town

We grab all the prisoners out of the mine and start walking back to town. The plan is: We were brought in to recover these people…and here they are! We’ll walk back to town, dispelling the mind control, and we’ll walk into town with all these people.

Yun is out ahead, being sneaky, while Todd brings up the rear watching for pursuit.

Todd suddenly calls out, “We’re headed the wrong way!” He tries to get everyone to change direction. While they’re arguing, a blood tick comes out from behind and jumps onto Quentin’s face.

Quentin screams, trying to pull the tick off. Guadalupe boosts his strength, allowing him to partially pull it off. He runs toward Yun, begging her to cut it off him. She turns around, pulling her whip. Quentin stops short, screaming “What are you doing?!?!?!” Before he can react, she lashes out with the whip and hits the tick square on its back. It manages to hold on and finally crawl into Quentin’s mouth and down his throat.

Two more ticks jump onto Yun, climbing up her chest. In response, Quentin fires two bolts directly at the ticks, killing them both. “THAT’S HOW YOU DO IT, GODDAMIT!”, Quentin yells at her.

Todd hands Quentin a bottle of booze and Quentin begins chugging it, trying to drown and/or kill the tick in his gullet. Todd then runs toward the tick nest and pours the rest of his booze on it.

Guadalupe conjures a whirlwind to pull all the ticks out of the nest. Everyone tries to set the booze-soaked tick cloud on fire, but everyone fails many times over. Finally, Todd pulls his revolver and fires it right next to the whirlwind. The explosion ignites the alcohol, burning all the ticks, but also burning everyone else nearby.

At the Mine

Fear having failed, it’s time to get down and dirty with these guys outside the mine.

Yun sees that Quentin is in trouble and circles around behind the guards outside the mine. Quentin spots Yun and tries to keep all the attention on himself. Yun successfully sneaks right up behind the last gunman, silently draws her club, and smashes him over the head. He looks quite stunned, and Yun realizes she’s wielding a Club of Complacency.

A fight ensues with the gunmen, as Todd Carver and Sister Guadalupe come running out of the woods. The gunmen are quickly defeated, but Little Wolf, the Indian brave escapes.

A quick interrogation of the surviving gunman reveals very little, only that he’s a slightly crazy cultist. The mine is full of ghost rock (ie. roca de phantasma), but other than that, we don’t get much info out of the prisoner. We tell him that we’re going to leave him tied to the tree and come back.

Everett in Camp

To learn more about the cultists, Everett wanders through the camp. He sits next to someone to strike up a conversation. They shift away from him, and when he greets them, they look quite surprised and leave him.

Getting frustrated, he finally casts fear on the entire camp. A feeling of dread settles over the camp, but Everett can tell that it didn’t have the desired effect. Slamming his hands on the table in front of him, he stands and casts fear a second time. Again, it fails to scare the camp. Giving up and questioning his faith, Everett wanders toward the outskirts of camp.

Convening at Camp

We all come together back at the camp with Everett. He reports what he found in the camp, and we decide to sneak into one of the tents and try to unlock a locked chest. He attempts the key we took from TC Brady’s desk, and it almost fits but no good. Instead, he pulls out his lock picks to pop the lock.

Inside the chest there are several letters, and Todd and Everett begin browsing through them as someone begins approaching the tent. Yun, who is outside and spots the man approaching, uses her powers to lower his perception.

When the man opens the tent flap, Quentin grabs him and throws him to the ground. Quentin squats down and begins peppering the man with questions. The man gets more and more confused.

Two more men begin approaching the tent, so we decide it’s time to grab the documents and get out of the tent. Yun was spotted as we ran away from the tent.

Posse at the Jail

Talking to the Preacher

Everett goes to speak to the preacher…(I missed what came from here)

The Posse

A group of gunslingers walks into the jail. Without warning, they shoot Deputy Barnes in cold blood. Quentin throws his hands up and surrenders, hoping this is the group of kidnappers they’ve been looking for all this time. He’s led out of the cell to a horse-drawn coach.

Yun grabs her horse and the rest of the gang and heads out after the coach. They can’t all ride on Yun’s horse, so Guadalupe uses her skills to charm Penny, Quentin’s horse.

The Chase

The gang trails the coach at a distance, not giving themselves away. Quentin tries to entertain and chat with his captors.

All of a sudden, a giant tick jumps onto the coach. Quentin tries to warn his captors, but one of them gets grabbed by the tick. Another of the gunslingers kicks the hapless tick’s victim out the door. It turns out his name is Frank.

The Camp

Quentin and his captors roll up to the camp. There are roughly 20 people finishing up their work for their evening and are congregating in a cleared circle at the center of the camp.

In the darkness, Yun and Guadalupe sneak into the camp to observe, spot Quentin, then sneak back out.

Quentin is taken to the center of the camp, where he watches a fight. The winner leaves the ring, but the loser walks in a spiral to the center, and drinks from a gourd and lays down. Everyone disperses and walks away.

Yun sneaks further in, specifically to the man in the center of the fighting pit. He doesn’t appear to be breathing. She sniffs the vessel he drank from and it doesn’t smell like anything. However, the vessel has the same spiral as the Indian brave’s club and the key found at TC Brady’s ranch. Yun grabs the bottle before she leaves camp.

The next morning, Quentin is taken north out of the camp along with 3 gunmen.

Into the Jail

Quentin and Yun get hauled off to jail. On the way, a young deputy cuffs Quentin on the head, and Quentin tries to head butt him in return, but completely fails. Yun kicks Quentin in the butt and tells him to just get along.

To annoy the sheriff and deputy, Quentin begins banging his cuffs against the bars and singing a song:

♫ There once was a man named Bob Daugherty ♫
♫ He called me out in the street and got shot-erty ♫
♫ I got hauled off to jail ♫
♫ For more than eight dollars bail ♫
♫ They won’t take off my chains ♫
♫ So I wrattle their brains ♫
♫ And I start the song over once more… ♫

Todd Carver comes in and bails out Yun for $15, but the murder charges against Quentin mean he has to stay.

Todd heads off to the TC Brady ranch to see if he can follow up on a lead where he thought he saw a dead man watching from the shadows when Quentin fought his duel.

Yun stakes out a position where she can watch the jail. A nun comes up and talks to her, but Yun stays sharp and sees an Indian brave walking down the street, recognizing him as one of the braves they saw earlier at the mine the other day. However, the brave is dressed in a western style, so as to be inconspicuous.

Yun tells the nun, Guadalupe, to watch the jail in case anything happens to Quentin. Yun follows the brave down the street and sees a cellar door has been unlatched. With careless abandon, Yun throws the door open and the last light of sunset filters down the stairs. She creeps into the cellar but doesn’t find anything. So, she creeps back out and smashes the lock with her fancy new club.

Back at the jail, Quentin is served his dinner by the deputy. He gets his cuffs removed, but they also take his cards and other possessions.

Off the Train and Into the Trees

We stumble into the woods and confront a party of Indian braves. They ambush our party, rushing to engage Yun. Everett responds with a thunderclap, stunning two of them.

Quentin steps forward and casts fear on the braves, showing them a vision of what he saw on the day he deserted. Several of the braves were panicked, but on the other hand, Yun nearly had a heart attack and passed out.

After defeating the braves, another one came crashing through the bushes on horseback, club raised high. Despite his great strength, we managed to kill him very quickly. As his horse started to run away, Everett cast beast friend to bring him back. He turns out to be quite a spirited horse.

We argued for a few minutes about what to do with the horse, but eventually decide we’ll try to break the horse. With Everett using his beast friend spells, Yun tries to break the horse and has some marginal success. We manage to control it enough to have it follow us back to town.

After resting overnight, the next morning dawns. As soon as he steps outside, Quentin is called out to a duel by Bob Daughtery. With witnesses all around, Quentin is unable to use his spells to weasel out of it and is forced to duel. Luckily, he manages to win the duel and kill Bob. Afterward, he defaces Bob’s corpse and shoots him several more times. This brings the sheriff who promptly arrests Quentin and Yun.

Quentin loses it in the street, screaming out, “What does a guy have to do to get disappeared around here? I’m a nice guy, and I’ve spent all this time being rude, and I still haven’t been kidnapped!”

Head to the Ghost Rock mines

Heading towards the ghost rock mines in sioux territory to try to see if there are any kidnapped people working in the mines, who they lease-ish to other people.

Todd is looking through TC Brady’s papers and finds the name Cloud Eagle Run.

Most of the party takes the train (yun rides her horse). They arrive, Todd mentions Cloud Eagle Run’s name, and they are ushered towards a carriage after giving all their names (Quentin gives a fake name)

They arrive at a mining shanty town. Todd asked about talking with Cloud Eagle Run, who was a boss there. He talked to him privately and said that he worked with the US Govt and wanted to ask about Brady, who might be doing some illicit dealings. Cloud Eagle Run said he had good security but would keep an eye out for Brady.

The mine didn’t look like it was related to the missing people from what they could tell, the workers they saw didn’t look kidnapped.

On the train ride back, Todd thought he saw a zombie, and everyone on the train jumped off after he convinced the conductor to stop the train. They searched around for a zombie, but didn’t find one, because as Everett pointed out, it was actually an indian brave. They followed the tracks and found an indian brave who popped out from the trail.
